Osteopathy for babies and children aims to help encourage natural development. When osteopaths examine babies areas of tension are often found in the spine or head, which are indications that the baby is uncomfortable. A baby cannot complain of backache or headache, and will typically express this by crying and being unsettled or irritable. Cranial Osteopathy is a gentle technique aimed to release these tensions.
In a research study conducted by Clive Hayden into the effects of cranial osteopathic treatment on babies, some parents perceived the following changes in their children’s behaviour: Reduced colicky crying, improved sleep, less unsettled, less irritable behaviour and increased quiet happy spells.
In older children osteopathy is useful for massage of muscles. In a growth spurt the long bones of the legs can grow faster than the muscles can stretch.
We first brought our daughter to Carragh on a recommendation from a paediatric nurse. Our daughter was diagnosed with severe silent reflux at 15 days old and we were advised that cranial osteopathy could compliment the medical treatment she was receiving.
We saw Carragh on a weekly basis for a number of months and during that time we saw our daughter change from a very sick baby to a baby who thrived. When we first brought her in she was a very stressed, tense baby who cried for 13 hours a day and was obviously in a lot of pain. Carragh's treatment helped relieve her pain and allowed her to relax. We were able to see the comfort our daughter was getting during the treatment and the visible difference in her post each treatment was truly amazing.
I cannot recommend Carragh enough, her treatment of our daughter was life changing for us during a very difficult time.

After having my baby daughter diagnosed with reflux at 4 weeks old, a friend suggested going to see an Osteopath for treatment. My baby would rarely settle throughout the day and would often scream due to her discomfort. Having been to just three sessions with Carragh at the Osteopathic surgery, there has been a major transformation in my daughters behaviour. The relaxing and non-invasive treatment means that my daughter is now able to sleep during the day. Her reflux has almost stopped completely-she is now a more relaxed and contented baby which has made things alot easier for me! Carragh has also given me lots of advice on how to ensure this progression continues myself so that I can help my daughter more.
